According to Wayne County prosecutors, Craig Bergeron, 35, from Saline, Michigan, is accused of shooting Tommy Ireland, 37, on December 23 last year.
From poker circuit titles to prison doors, it was just one step
Authorities report that Bergeron fled after the incident but was later apprehended. Details surrounding the crime are limited, but police say Bergeron used a rifle to shoot Ireland at a residence east of Detroit. Law enforcement was called to the scene around 8:40 PM that evening.
It is also alleged that, after the alleged murder, Bergeron assaulted another person in St. Clair Shores. The charges against him indicate that he has a prior criminal record.
In the world of poker, Bergeron is known for accumulating over $1 million in tournament winnings, playing online under the pseudonym "hu4rollz". Among his notable performances are a fourth-place finish at the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Showdown in 2012, earning $212,976, and a victory at a World Series of Poker Circuit event in 2011. In 2010, he also finished fourth at an European Poker Tour event, winning $312,853. However, his tournament results have been less frequent since 2019.
The family and friends of the victim gathered on Thursday evening for a vigil in memory of Tommy Ireland. Ashley Ireland, the sister of the victim, stated that the family did not know Bergeron and did not know the reasons that might have led him to commit this act. "We are looking for answers and demanding justice," she told CBS News Detroit. "For now, we know nothing."
