Poker player Maurice Hawkins, holder of 21 WSOP Circuit titles, was violently attacked during a private game in Florida. A video anonymously sent to PokerNews shows a player hitting him several times before other participants intervened.
Accounts differ on the origin of the incident. One source claims that Hawkins provoked another player by boasting about his boxing skills. A participant present, Tray Rock, on the other hand, describes a sudden attack by a player named Eugene, due to a disagreement related to their African-American identity.
Hawkins responded on social media, explaining that he was surprised from behind and denying having been "beaten up" as some comments claim.
The player, already involved in other incidents in the past, finds himself once again at the center of an extra-poker affair. While violence in private games is increasingly under scrutiny, physical confrontations remain unusual in the world of poker.
Both in casinos and private games, recent cases have reminded us that table tensions can sometimes escalate, such as a brawl earlier this year in a Las Vegas poker room, where a player lost consciousness during an altercation.
